Dear Acting Director Smith,

I am a Georgia resident who lives near the Chattahoochee River in Georgia.  One of the most important recreational sites in my community is the National Park Service’s Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area (CRNRA), which protects much of the river and provides key public access points.  As metro Atlanta grows, the demand for river access continues to increase, and the places where we access the river continue to become more and more crowded.

To help address these concerns, I ask that you allocate $1,300,000 in Recreational Access funding to acquire the 32-acre James Creek Parcel as part of the CRNRA.  The acquisition of this property will enable the National Park Service to protect important riverfront land and expand recreational opportunities at the Bowman’s Island Unit.  James Creek will provide approximately 1,200 feet of frontage on the Chattahoochee and an additional 2,500 feet of frontage on James Creek.  This would create an easily accessible entry point for fishing and paddling via public roads in a rapidly growing area.  We understand that the owner has agreed to sell the property for public recreational access if the deal can be completed in the next several months, but cannot wait indefinitely.  I am afraid that if the wait is shunted to future budget years, the opportunity to secure this area for kayaking / fishing/ canoeing will be lost.

I have followed the CRNRA’s progress in increasing protected riverfront land and increasing the number of spots for people to get to the river for fishing, paddling and other recreation.  Therefore, I was surprised and disappointed to hear that the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area has not been recommended for funding in the proposed Federal FY19 budget.  There are several critical river access points that could be lost if not acquired soon.

Thank you for your consideration of my request, and I hope that you will be able to support this important acquisition.

Sincerely,

Dear Acting Director Smith,

I write on behalf of ____________________________, a not-for-profit group that works on the Chattahoochee River in Georgia.   One focal point of our efforts is the National Park Service’s Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area (CRNRA), which protects much of the river and provides key public access points.   As metro Atlanta grows, the demand for river access continues to increase, and the places where we access the river continue to become more and more crowded.
